"The Winds of Change"
Quintin Shepherd
255 feet from the ground, a person can't help but admire the majestic beauty of our community.

Climbing 255 feet up through the center of one of our new windmills however, a person begins to think they've embarked on something crazy, stupid, or maybe both. In March, I had the opportunity to meet Marty Masters, the new project superintendent with White Construction of the windmill project south and east of town. I got an up close and personal tour of 'Adam,' a prototype windmill (one of only six in the world), that will generate enough power to meet the electrical demands of up to 2,000 homes. I didn't get a chance to climb up inside Adam, but had the opportunity to climb into 'E5,' one of the other windmills further to the South. When we reached E5, I was strapped into a climbing harness, given quick instructions on the climb and told not to be embarrassed if I "locked up". I wasn't going to lock up, and miss this opportunity. Once we had ascended the pillar (stopping only four times on the way), we were greeted by a crew of four men already working in the 'mailbox' at the top. The sheer size of the mailbox is astounding- but the complicated inner workings of the system, from the generators, to the transformers, to the panels, and the turbine are truly overwhelming. These pieces of equipment are a testament to the power of electrical and mechanical design. Marty proceeded to pop the top of the mailbox, and I was given a rare opportunity to examine our beautiful communities from a perspective that won't soon be forgotten. We all know that these windmills will have a positive affect on our global health, which is a good thing. Furthermore, the windmills will have a financial impact on our community and school as well. We are estimating 49 turbines throughout the Amboy school district, each generating 2 megawatts (except for 'Adam,' which generates about 2.5 megawatts).I am truly grateful to Marty for the opportunity I was given and appreciate the many workers I met that day for taking their time to allow me a brief look into their world. I'm not jealous of their morning commute (that 255 foot ladder climb), but I do envy the view from their office. I was struck by this notion that these windmills are now a part of our community, no different from the school district, the depot museum, the park, or any other feature we associate with Amboy.
