 == The Lunch Line ==
notes from the AHS Cafeteria

The Rest of the Story.....

"How's school going?"
"Okay, I
"Did you eat lunch today?   What'd you have?"
"Chicken patty -again!"

You might have carried on a similar conversation with your high school student. Contrary to popular jokes - chicken patties are not the only food choice offered at the Amboy High School. Do you realize the wide array of choices offered to students during lunch?
Students at AHS have a choice of two different venues from which to choose. In the hot lunch line, students may receive a complete meal tray, including choice of entrée, a vegetable or fruit, dessert, (if on the menu for the day), bread, and milk The hot lunch line always offers a second choice hot or sandwich item each day for additional purchase and students may also purchase any of the items in this line individually. A salad bar is offered on most days and different ice cream products are also available for sale.
The whole hot lunch tray is by far the best deal offered. Students who receive free or reduced price meals must use this line and must take a full hot lunch tray to qualify. The student will never be identified as receiving free or reduced meals to any other student.
The third area students may purchase food from is the very popular snack line. This line offers cold deli sub sandwiches, made fresh daily. Other items for sale include a wide variety of chips, prepackaged cookies, snack mixes and packaged candies. Lunchables and fruits are also available. Free and reduced prices do not apply on this line or the a'la carte line.
In addition to milk for sale at lunch, there is pop, water, Gatorade, and juice machines on at all times in the building. These machines use cash only and prices vary from 50¢ to $1.25. There are no other vending machines in use at the high school.
The main entrée each day at the high school is also on the Junior High and Central School menus, but all other items and choices are unique to the high school and change daily.  The menu is posted weekly and also read to the students during daily announcements.
Students may pay cash at the high school for their lunch items, but the complete use of the "Lunchbox Point of Sale" program by all students would make the lunch lines move faster.  The "Lunchbox" program is a debit card based system where students access their accounts with a school-issued personal ID card. Parents may send cash or checks at any time to deposit into their student's individual account.  The student scans the ID card at the register and their purchases are charged to their account.  No money needs to be handled at all. A student can pay still pay cash for purchases, but must scan their card, find their money, wait for change, etc. Carrying cash can also sometimes result in misplaced or lost money.  Depositing into your "Lunchbox" account is the fastest, safest, and easiest way to manage lunch money. Check and cash deposits may be made in the high school office. Please note that deposits made after 10:00 a.m may not be posted to an account until the next day. Cash may be deposited during lunchtime with any of the three cashiers in the cafeteria and will post to the account immediately.
If a parent wishes to see what their student is eating each day (and where money is being spent), all they need to do is call the school office and request a printout of purchases their student has made. The cashiers verbally remind students when their accounts are running low. Students may charge a hot lunch if their card does not have enough credit, but snack items may not be charged. Charges must be taken care of in the week they are incurred. Letters are sent to parents of students whose accounts are at a negative balance.  Students may not "take money off their account' to buy pop, water, etc.  Please realize your student may need change for these purchases.
All AHS students have received a hard-plastic picture ID to use for lunch purchases. Every student is required to scan his or her card for any purchase. Students will have to be responsible and have their ID cards with them each day at lunch &endash; not left in their lockers or at home. Students not having their cards will go to the end of the line. Students must use their own card and number. Replacement cards are available at a cost of $5.00 to students who lose or break their cards.
Parents may place restrictions on their student's accounts, if they feel it is necessary. For example, a parent may limit their student's a'la carte item (snack) purchases to 75¢ or $1 per day or restrict their student from purchasing anything except a full meal tray. Parents wishing to place restrictions on their student's account must notify the high school office.

Hopefully, this letter gives you a little insight into the lunch program at the high school. Now you know -there's always more than just chicken patties served here!

Simplify your life : Deposit money in your lunch account!

You won't need cash each day and the line will move faster.
